(Thailand Privilege Card)

(Non-Immigrant O-A)

3. LTR簽證(Long-Term Resident)

This article is written primarily for Hong Kong families considering relocation to Thailand — the visa options, school costs, and living expense comparison most relevant to their situation. If you're a UK national, see our dedicated guide: Retiring in Thailand from the UK.

More and more Hong Kong families are exploring a move to Thailand — driven by pace of life, living space, education costs, and uncertainty about the future. But behind "moving to Thailand" lies a series of very specific questions: Which visa gives you the right to stay long-term? Which schools can your children attend? What does it actually cost per month?

This guide skips the lifestyle photography and addresses the three things HK families most want to know: visa status, children's education, and real living costs.

Step 1: Choosing the Right Long-Stay Visa

Hong Kong passport holders don't have visa-free long-stay access to Thailand (unlike some Western passports). For stays of a year or more, there are three main routes:

1. Thailand Privilege Card

A one-time membership fee for 5–20 years of residency — no age limit, no income proof, no bank deposit required. 2026 reference pricing ranges from Gold tier (~฿900,000 / 5 years) to Reserve (~฿5,000,000 / 20 years). For HK families under 50 who don't yet qualify for a retirement visa, this is usually the most straightforward starting point.

2. Retirement Visa (O-A)

Available to applicants aged 50+. Requires either a Thai bank deposit of ฿800,000 (~$23,000, maintained continuously) or foreign income of ฿65,000/month (~$1,870). Note: HK passport holders are not on the 14-country list for the O-X (10-year) visa, so HK applicants follow the annual renewal O-A route.

3. LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident)

Highest bar — the "Wealthy Pensioner" category requires $80,000/year passive income, or $40,000/year + $250,000 Thai investment. In return: 10-year residency and a 17% flat income tax rate. Best suited to HK families with substantial overseas income who plan to remit funds to Thailand.

Our take for HK families: Under 50 → Privilege Card is typically the simplest and most flexible starting point. Over 50 with steady pension → O-A retirement visa has lower hard costs. Only consider LTR if your passive income already clears the threshold.

Step 2: Children's Education — Are Bangkok Schools Really Cheaper?

This is the question most HK families ask first. The honest answer: yes, Bangkok international school fees are generally lower than Hong Kong's — but not uniformly so.

StageBangkok Annual Fee (approx.)HK International School Annual Fee (approx.)
Early Years (2–5)฿350,000–700,000$20,000–35,000 USD (~฿700,000–1,225,000)
Primary฿500,000–900,000Same range; top schools higher
Middle School฿650,000–1,000,000Same
Senior/IB Diploma฿800,000–1,200,000 (top schools up to ฿1,300,000)Same, top schools at ceiling

To illustrate: even Bangkok's most expensive IB senior school (~฿1.3M/year, ~$38,000) still sits in the middle of Hong Kong's international school fee range. Choose a solid mid-tier Bangkok school (฿600,000–900,000/year) and you're looking at potential savings of HK$100,000–200,000 per child per year compared to a comparable Hong Kong school.

Step 3: Living Costs — Bangkok vs Hong Kong

Overall, a middle-class HK family (couple + 2 children) choosing mid-level housing, international schooling, and a similar lifestyle will typically spend about 60–75% of their Hong Kong monthly outgoings in Bangkok. Education and domestic help account for most of the savings.

Tax: Leaving HK Doesn't Mean Leaving HK's Tax System

A common misconception: "Moving to Thailand means I stop dealing with Hong Kong tax." It's more nuanced:

If you have complex income (investment returns, overseas company dividends, etc.), we strongly recommend consulting an advisor familiar with both HK and Thai tax rules before your move, to plan the timing and method of remitting funds.

FAQ

Q1: Do HK passport holders need a visa to enter Thailand?

HK passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for short stays, but short-stay visa-exempt entry cannot be used as a basis for long-term residency. A Privilege Card, retirement visa, or LTR is required for stays exceeding the exemption period.

Q2: Can I include my children in a Thailand Privilege Card application?

Yes — children under 21 can typically be added as associate members, subject to an additional fee based on the membership tier.

Q3: How competitive are Bangkok international school admissions? How far in advance should we apply?

Top schools (especially IB diploma programmes) have limited places — contact schools at least 6–12 months ahead to arrange assessments and get onto waiting lists if needed.

Q4: What are the biggest "hidden costs" when moving from HK to Bangkok?

Typically: one-time school enrollment/building fund fees, pet quarantine and transport, and temporary accommodation during the initial settling-in period. We recommend setting aside the equivalent of at least 3 months' living expenses as a relocation buffer.
